I'm an "up-to-date" first-time grandmother, living in Henderson, the town alongside Las Vegas, NV. I'm originally from California; I was born in Long Beach and grew up in West Los Angeles. I moved to the 'Vegas area to be near my parents, when they decided to retire here --- and "got stuck", sixteen years ago! It's okay. I like the heat. It's the cold I can't take (low blood pressure).
What is your current occupation? Do you enjoy it?
My occupation? You mean, BESIDES caring for my mom, who's now 83 and fighting cancer --- the grandson (Steve's 2 1/2 --- but people think he's FIVE, all the time, since he's already 42 inches tall and STARTING TO READ AND SPELL) --- and three dogs (my daughter and ex-son-in-law bought a female ShihTsu to keep her male Yorkshire terrier company --- which resulted in a FEW litters --- of "Yorkasilkashiht" puppies!) I illustrate children's books (which I LOVE doing!) --- and I've written (and illustrated, of course) a children's story, myself.
What is your educational background? Are you currently in school?
Originally, I majored in foreign languages, in high school and then in college. I speak fluent Spanish, French, Hebrew (--- does "Yiddish" count?!) --- along with some vocabulary in German, Italian, Hungarian, Japanese and Russian. (Everyone says it's a "talent"; PERSONALLY, I was tickled to death that it GOT ME OUT OF HAVING TO TAKE ALGEBRA, TO GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL, since that subject SCARED THE [blank] OUT OF ME!) At the age of 35, once my daughter was in kindergarten, I went BACK to college, majored in developmental psychology and then taught HeadStart preschool for a few years. I'm not in school, now; no.
Describe your lifestyle and current relationship status:
Lifestyle and relationship status, huh? After having sneezed my way through not one --- but THREE marriages --- I learned something about myself; I'm HIGHLY ALLERGIC TO CHEAP MEN! I'm a divorcee --- but I've STOPPED SNEEZING, YEARS AGO! I lead a quiet lifestyle. I have --- an "okay" relationship with my mother --- a "rather strained" relationship with my daughter --- because I have a LOUSY relationship with her current boyfriend --- since, for one thing, he's ONLY 12 YEARS YOUNGER THAN I AM and she's 27 --- a BEAUTIFUL relationship with my GORGEOUS grandson (that's my "partner in crime", right there!) --- and several e-mail and "in-person" platonic friends.
Do you have any vices (smoking/drinking/etc)? Describe:
I DO smoke. I gave it up, once, for six months --- but then I realized something; already in my 50's, I don't think I'm going to "be a pop singer", anymore --- and I ENJOY SMOKING! I don't "indulge in" anything else, though, in the way of "controlled substances" and "stuff you have to be a certain age to try, legally" --- because I never WAS much of a drinker --- so I never developed a "tolerance" for it. One Tylenol or half a can of beer --- and I'd better be NEAR A BED, since that's pretty much WHERE I'LL BE HEADED! Living in the 'Vegas area, of course, I think I'd feel "unpatriotic", if I didn't try SOME "gaming"; I play a little video poker, on pay-days.
Do you have any "heroes" in your life or your work? Describe:
Almost all of my "heroes" who are still living --- are also "friends" of mine, on MySpace: Robin Williams; Ester Goldberg (who invited me here!); WHOOPI Goldberg (no relation, of course, to Ester!); Ron White; Lewis Black; Bill Engvall; Adam Sandler --- I KNOW I'm forgetting people! My "family" hero, though, was my mother's mother, whose name was Esther (Licht) Michelson.
Do you have a favorite quotation? Enter it here:
FAVORITE QUOTE: Robin Williams once said (to paraphrase --- to "keep it at least 'PG-13', here" ---) that God gave Man a brain --- and genitalia --- but unfortunately not enough blood and oxygen to OPERATE BOTH, SIMULTANEOUSLY! (Think about it, men; can you REALLY CONCENTRATE, when you're feeling "aroused"?!)
    What makes you happy? Why?
What makes me happy? That would have to include moments like the evening I spent in an operating room, watching a doctor perform Cesarean section on my daughter --- and bring forth my grandson, Steve --- who REALLY DID smile at me, while I was putting a little hospital-issued T-shirt on him, for the first time --- because I was reciting the rhyme about "Fuzzy Wuzzy Was a Bear". Creating makes me happy, like my illustrating and playing my keyboard. Spending time with my dogs and/or my grandson makes me happy --- because it's fulfilling to a person to feel "needed". --- And MONEY --- THRILLS THE HECK OUTA ME --- because I'M HUMAN!
    What makes you sad? Why?
Certain songs make me "weepy", if they remind me of a person, place or CHRONOLOGICAL AGE I'll never enjoy again, in THIS lifetime. Also saddening is death, of course --- hearing about children who have no-one to care for them adequately --- hearing about crime against people unable to defend themselves, like kids, the "differently-abled", Seniors, etc. --- remembering how much longer we still have to wait before we can ELECT A DIFFERENT PRESIDENT --- and LOSING MONEY makes me sad -- because I'm HUMAN!
Name five (5) items you can't live without:
Here goes; here are five things I can't live without: 1) my grandson 2) music 3) my art supplies 4) Pepsi 5) cigarettes (Trust me; I've tried, before!)
    Describe your most "humbling" moment:
As many rows of birthday candles as I've already extinguished, this might sound odd, to a younger person --- but I don't thiink my "MOST humbling moment" --- has happened, yet! (I keep hoping!)
Do you have favorite type of music? Favorite bands or singers?
As far as music, I'm pretty eclectic --- but I do have some faves: disco; Dixieland; anything '70's-Retro, especially by the Eagles --- and my favorite songs include "Dream a Little Dream of Me" (Mama Cass Elliot), "The Rainbow Connection" (Kermit the Frog), "It's a Wonderful World" (Louis Armstrong), "Money" (Pink Floyd), "Hotel California" (the Eagles), "Blame It on the Boogie" (Michael Jackson), "Pick Up the Pieces" (Average White Band), "I Wish" (Stevie Wonder), "Come Together" (Paul McCartney) --- and "Raisins and Almonds" (an old Yiddish lullaby --- but Mandy Patinkin did record it, not too long ago)
What type of films do you enjoy? Please give some examples:
I LOVE comedies and "family" movies --- almost anything with Robin Williams or Eddie Murphy --- and my most recent faves are "Happy Feet", "Man of the Year" and "RV".
Do you enjoy television? Which programs?
On television, my favorite channels are Comedy Central --- and The Food Network. (I might have forgotten to mention that I LOVE to cook and have a real taste for gourmet foods!) I watch quite a few movies, also, on HBO, Starz and On Demand.
Do you like to read? If so, what books have you enjoyed recently?
The main book I've been interested in, lately --- is THE ONE i'VE WRITTEN AND ILLUSTRATED, MYSELF! That may sound SELF-CENTERED --- but I think, at my age, a little of that --- is PERMITTED!
Do you follow sports? Which teams are you interested in?
I don't "follow sports", per se --- but I do enjoy watching basketball and soccer games, occasionally --- and, while I don't really enjoy wrestling, that wrestler who calls himself "The Rock" --- is a REALLY NICE-LOOKING YOUNG MAN! (I CAN almost "smell what he's cooking"!)
Do you have any hobbies or other interests? Describe:
I think I've already covered "hobbies and interests":keyboard; hand-illustration/drawing/sketching; cooking; small dogs; my grandson; my computer/e-mail/"spaces" --- and knitting and crocheting
Where are your favorite places? Where would you like to go most?
I've been to Hawaii, Mexico (just below the border, anyway!), England, Italy, had a brief stopover, during a flight, in Moscow, Russia --- and I've lived in Israel --- twice. I think I'd enjoy seeing Hawaii, again --- and maybe Israel. The thought of "living out of a suitcase", being "without my familiar creature-comforts", tolerating airline security delays, less-than-optimal cabin pressure, lost luggage and/or JET LAG, though, ever again, MAKES ME CRINGE!

About the show: "Grandma's FUNNY, Dude!"
Of my two grandmothers, my dad's mom dated George Burns, when he was still Nate Birenbaum --- and DUMPED HIM --- and played piano amazingly, never having had a lesson in her life. My mom's mother, at fifteen-and-a-half, almost made her whole family miss the boat they were taking, at three in the morning, to ESCAPE POLAND --- because "her new dress wasn't finished --- and there might be CUTE BOYS on board". At my wedding, since my ex-husband was Moroccan, there was a SIX-FOOT BRASS HOOKA PIPE --- and my grandmother DID "HIT" IT --- and the evening she "knew she was dying", she called 40 members of the family together, in her 10x12 hospital room --- for A SING-ALONG --- and then really went to sleep and NEVER WOKE UP, AGAIN! Grandmas are A FREAKIN' RIOT! Now, I'M a grandma --- but I CHEATED; I've been a freakin' riot --- FOR YEARS, NOW! I'm "up on the latest", sort of --- I have a profile on MySpace --- I've done everything for a living from teaching preschool to SELLING MALE PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT ON THE 'PHONE --- we'll all have a good time, NO MATTER WHAT YOUR AGE! --- So what can I tell you? BE THERE!
