At 2 Grandmas we create podcasts to play to kids. Now you can get the Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Anderson, Beatrix Potter, and George Stories by Agitha George read to your child by one of our two grandmas.
Starting the beginning of the new year 2 Grandmas Chat will be going to a new format. Grandmas will be a weekly broadcast alternating weeks between stories for children younger than eight (2 Grandmas for General Audience) and stories for children 8 and older (2 Grandmas for Parental Guidance)

Do you have any "heroes" in your life or your work? Describe:
I have one big hero in my life. It's likely the most frequent answer: My Mom. I watched her--when I was young--befriend a woman that the rest of the neighborhood saw no redeeming qualities in. The woman had three kids and the youngest was 4 and still not walking. The middle told bald faced lies and struck out frequently in anger. The oldest child was flunking 1st grade.
Their house was filled with maggots and flies. Her husband even ignored her; ignoring the kids, too, preferring to drink himself into oblivion.
Mom saw past the neglected children and filthy house to Mary's (not her real name) heart. Mary had grown up neglected by her own parents and by the world at large. She'd never been taught how to clean house or take care of children. She was not a smart woman but she was full of heart. This is what my mother saw, and she became friends with Mary.
She never talked down to Mary, and she never "instructed" her. They were friends, and they talked about what things did and didn't work in their life. She would come over to our house to help mom clean, and in doing so she would learn more of the right way to manage her own house. Gradually Mary's housekeeping improved.
They discussed their children. Mom only had six back then. They confided in each other the difficulties of potty training and encouraging kids to walk and learn; how to keep them from lying and how to be their kid's favorite person, but not a buddy. Soon the youngest was walking and the middle one stopped lying and the oldest started enjoying school.
She did it so quietly, my mother. ...so gently that I don't think my brothers and sisters even noticed.
It is 40 years since we lived next to Mary. It's 19 years since my mother died from ovarian cancer. Yet I know that it was this woman who shaped my life and I am so very grateful to her. I miss her still.
